Shipbuilding Mechanical Engineering at Jiangsu University of Science and Technology is based on the mechanical discipline since 1933. It has become a microcosm of Shipbuilding Mechanical Engineering education after 80 years of changes and development. The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Mechanics, School of Machinery and Power Engineering are all the predecessors of the School of Mechanical Engineering established in August 2008, along with the transfer of the school of Power Engineering. The School of Mechanical Engineering is one of the schools at JUST with a long history and academic strength and has become an important base of shipbuilding and ocean engineering machinery, high-tech equipment and personnel training along with scientific research facilities.
The School of Shipbuilding Mechanical Engineering has formed a union with a high level education system, a healthy participation in research, a rich engineering experience, and reasonable teaching structure. There are 71 faculty and staff members in the school including 8 full professors and 27 associate professors. Forty percent of the total number of full-time teachers holds Ph.D. degrees. Nine of the teachers are young academic leaders, targeted trainees, and outstanding instructors of Jiangsu Province.
The School has three undergraduate majors including the following: mechanical design and manufacturing and automation, mechanical and electronic engineering and industrial design; The School has one first-level discipline of masters’ degree authorization center, three secondary discipline of masters’ degree authorization centers, and a training field for Masters of Engineering.
The School has more than 1,000 undergraduate students and over 230 graduate students. Since 1978, the School has cultivated more than 10,000 undergraduate students and nearly 500 graduates.
The School owns one of the major laboratories of Jiangsu Province and one excellent production-study-research combined base for graduate training. The School has built a provincial specialty, a provincial-level experimental demonstration center and eight provincial-level enterprise workstations for graduate students. Also, one experimental major of national-level Excellence Engineer Training Plan is recognized by the Ministry of Education of China, one key construction professional major of Jiangsu Province's 12th Five-Year Plan and one experimental and practice education center of higher education institute of Jiangsu Province.
The School has professional laboratories and advanced teaching facilities, which are available for the students and faculty to do some in class teaching and innovative practice with favorable environment and experimental conditions. In order to adapt to the advancement of technology, the School aims to cultivate practical talents for the forefront of production and pays high attention to enhancing the students' practical ability and engineering ability. In recent years, the School has received some awards including the Champion Cup Competition for the national undergraduate students and the Mechanical Innovative Design Competition in Jiangsu Province.
The School has capabilities to undertake major applications of fundamental research in the field of Mechanical Engineering, new concepts and new technological innovations and models developed in key technologies. The School has achieved fruitful results not only in the development of military equipment and other vessels; but also in machinery equipment and automatic control in civilian areas. In recent years, the School has hosted more than 20 projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, Provincial Natural Science Foundation of China, the Provincial Science and Technology-based Research Programs and National Defense Fundamental Research and the National Defense Model Contracts. The School receives research funds of ¥10 million per year, 2 to 3 Achievement Awards per year and more than 10 patents every year. Over 100 research papers are being published each year.
In the past five years, our School has paid high attention to the cooperation with enterprises and has trained about 1,500 people for the society with academic talents, which includes 1,300 from the academic education program and nearly 200 Engineering Masters. Most of them make a positive contribution to the enterprise's development and have received praise as well.
After decades of development, from the Huangpu River to the ancient canal, from Machinery Institute to the School of Mechanical Engineering, our School's development is the combination of the hard work and painstaking efforts of several generations of students and staff.
