School of Materials Scienceand Engineering, whose welding major  dates back to Shanghai Shipbuilding Industrial School in 1953, has a   history of about 60 years. It is one of the first three schools in China  to offer the welding major. Its predecessor, Department of Welding and  Materials, was established in 1988, and in 2003, it was renamed as the  School of Materials Science and Engineering.
After about 60 years of development, the school comprises one  doctorate degree autho rization center on Materials Science and  Engineering, in which four majors are offered for both doctorate and  master’s degree; Materials Physics and Chemistry, Materials Science,  Materials Processing Engineering and Materials Corrosion Science and  Protection. Also, one major on Materials Engineering is offered for  masters’ degree of engineering. As for undergraduate programs, six  majors are offered; Welding Technology and Engineering, Materials  Processing and Control Engineering, Metallic Materials Engineering,  Polymer Materials Science & Engineering, Materials Corrosion and  Protection and Electronic Packaging Technology. The major of Welding  Technology and Engineering is honored as a national characteristic major  by the experimental reform major subjects of national teaching, and as a  Jiangsu provincial characteristic major. The two majors of Metallic  Materials Engineering and Materials Processing and Control Enginering  are honored as Jiangsu characteristic majors as well.
Currently, the School includes a Jiangsu Provincial Key Lab on  Welding Technology and a Jiangsu Provincial ModelTeaching Demonstration  Center. The school boasts 22 professors, and over 40 associate  professors. Eighty percent of the faculty has Ph.D. degrees. The School  is currently offering courses to over 1600 undergraduate students and  300 doctoral candidates and master degree candidates.
The School has been issued nearly 200 patents, and has won 35  national, provincial and ministerial-level sci-tech awards, with more  than 10 million RMB scientific research funds. The School’s faculty has  published nearly 10 books and over 1000 papers recently, in which over  400 papers were indexed in SCI, EI or ISTP.
The School maintains a close academic relationship with other  universities and industries at home and abroad, including Osaka  University and EO Paten Electric Welding Institute, among others.
