The School of Mathematics and Physics of JUST, formerly known as  the Department of Basic Courses at Shanghai Shipbuilding Industry  School, was renamed the “Basic Courses Department” in 1978. In 2001, the  name was changed into the “Department of Mathematics and Physics” and  finally the name “School of Mathematics and Physics” was adopted in  2005. The School consists of 5 departments and 1 center, namely, the  Information and Computer Science Department, Applied Statistics  Department, Applied Physics Department, Undergraduate General  Mathematics Department, Undergraduate General Physics Department and  Experimental Center. The School has 88 faculty members, including 6  professors, 22 associate professors and 1 senior experimentalist. The  School has 5 master supervisors and master’s or doctor’s degree holders  among the full-time teachers reach 85%.
         The School of Mathematics and Physics attaches great importance  to the construction of infrastructure and labs. The Physics Laboratory  is a provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration center. With a  total area of 3,910 square meters, the lab’s total asset is worth up to  12 million Yuan. The number of expensive articles, each of which is  more than 200,000 Yuan, is 11. Besides, the School also has the College  Physics Lab, Applied Physics Lab and Mathematics Lab, which not only  undertake the task of experiment teaching and graduation design for  students in the physics major, but also provide a platform for teachers’  academic research and students’ science and technology practice.
         Our School owns 1 master degree program named Physical  Electronics and 3 undergraduate degree programs: Information and  Computer Science, Applied Physics and Applied Statistics. There are 652  enrolled undergraduates and 9 postgraduates at the School.
         Based on the educational view of training practical talents for  the society and according to the features of science students, the  School carries out a variety of the extra-curricular activities to  promote the all-round development of students, organizes them to  participate in the National Mathematics Contest for Undergraduates,  Mathematical Modeling Contest, Advanced Mathematics Contest for  Non-major Undergraduates of Jiangsu Province, Physical Innovation  Competition of Jiangsu Province and Extracurricular Science and  Technology Works Competition and so on in order to cultivate students'  scientific research and practical ability.
