December 22 to 27, at the invitation of the Ministry of Innovation and Science and Technology of Ethiopia (MISTE), Vice president Ji Chunyan led a delegation to visit Ethiopia. Under the coordination and arrangement of MISTE, the delegation, accompanied by Dr. Simenew Keskes, general adviser to the minister, visited the Addis Ababa University of Science and Technology (AAUST), the Ethiopian Institute of Biotechnology (EIB) and the Ethiopian Federal Institute for Agricultural Vocational Education and Training (EFIAVET).
AAUST is one of the two universities of science and technology directly under the jurisdiction of MISTE. With nine specialized schools, AAUST is highly valued by the government of Ethiopia as it shoulders the responsibility of providing professional talents for the country during the industrialization transition period. Dr. Adane Abraham, vice principal of AAUST, along with Mr. Abebe Dutoro, Dean of International Office, Mr. Girma Gonfa, Dean of Science and Technology Department and directors of Biotechnology Institute and Institute of Food, extended a warm welcome to Ji’s delegation and carried out exchanges on deep cooperation of both sides. EIB made full preparations for the visit of vice President Ji’s delegation. Dr. Kassa Huntesfaye, Dean of EIB introduced in detail the national research responsibilities undertaken by the institute, the research fields engaged in and the research achievements and was eager to cooperate with JUST in scientific research and talent cultivation. Dr Simenew Keskes, the General Adviser, said he would draw up a draft for early collaboration on biotechnology research and talent cultivation, based on the multi-party talks.
EFIAVET is a national training institution for agricultural technicians, where two teachers from school of biotechnology of JUST, were appointed by the Ministry of Commerce to carry out sericulture promotion and training. President Dr. Kebede and vice President Temeltu introduced the current situation of the institution to the delegation, and led the delegation to visit the breeding base, especially the development and application of sericulture technology.
This visit to Ethiopia witnessed the spread and application of sericulture technology research results in Africa and provided a successful sample for our analysis and research on cross-border education.
The visit delegation included staff of International Office and School of Biotechnology.
