From November 2nd to 9th, in order to further consolidate and expand the JUST’s international partnerships and optimize the structure of international student source, Pan Jinquan, Member of the Standing Committee of CPC JUST Committee and Vice President of JUST, at the invitation of relevant universities and institutions in Malaysia and Cambodia, led a delegation to visit Pannasastra University of Cambodia (PUC), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the Kuching Chung Hua Middle School Alumni Association, and Kuching High School. The delegation reached important consensus with these universities and institutions on the joint cultivation of international talents, construction of overseas student source bases, and scientific research cooperation. The delegation was also invited to attend the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Malaysia-China Diplomatic Relations and the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, which was organized by the Sarawak-China Friendship Association (SCFA).
During the visit, the delegation first had in-depth discussions with Prof. Justin Dara, Vice Chancellor of PUC, and Prof. Long Kimheng. PUC is a renowned comprehensive university in Cambodia and a member of University Alliance of the Silk Road. It is the only internationalized university in Cambodia that implements English Medium Instruction, and its educational philosophy and characteristics of marine disciplines are highly compatible with those of our university. Both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on jointly cultivating international talents and conducting research cooperation, reaching a preliminary intention on the cooperation program for PUC students to pursue dual degrees at our university. Both sides agreed to accelerate the promotion of this cooperation program to ensure that PUC students embark on their academic journey in China as soon as possible.
Afterwards, the delegation of Pan Jinquan had a cordial meeting with Ir. Ts, President Datuk of UTM. UTM is a renowned state comprehensive university in Malaysia with a complete set of specialties, performing excellently in the QS World University Rankings. Both sides held in-depth discussions on various areas, including discipline construction, mutual exchanges and scientific research cooperation, and signed a MoU on cooperation. This marks that the cooperation between the two universities in the joint cultivation of talents and scientific innovation will enter a new stage. Both sides expressed that they would take the signing of the MoU on cooperation as an opportunity to maintain close communication and gradually deepen their cooperation, jointly composing a new chapter of international collaboration.
On November 7th, the delegation of Pan Jinquan was invited to visit Kuching for a friendly exchange with Huang Guohui, President Datuk of the Chung Hua Middle School Alumni Association (the Association in short), and all the members of the Association. Pan Jinquan expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Overseas Chinese for their longstanding support to JUST and China, and introduced the basic information and the vision for the future development of JUST to the attendees. Huang Guohui warmly welcomed the delegation, highly praised our excellent academic achievements and outstanding research results, and expressed his sincere gratitude to our university for providing study opportunities for Sarawak students. He stated that the Association would continue to be committed to serving as a bridge between Sarawak students and JUST, laying a solid foundation for their path to further education. During the exchange, both sides agreed that this meeting not only deepened mutual understanding and strengthened friendship between both sides, but also provided a valuable platform to transcend geographical boundaries and jointly explore cooperation and development in higher education between China and Malaysia. Both sides expressed that they would take this exchange as an opportunity to further strengthen communication and cooperation, working together to add a brilliant touch to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations.
On the morning of November 8th, with the support of the Association, the delegation visited Kuching High School to conduct an enrollment seminar which received an ardent response from the school’s faculty and students. During the seminar, nearly 650 representatives of faculty and students listened to the enrollment policies and application process for international students. The delegation also engaged in lively and interesting interactive discussions with them. The faculty and students expressed that through this seminar, they had gained a more comprehensive understanding of JUST and would consider it one of their ideal target universities.
On the afternoon of November 8th, the delegation was invited to attend the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Malaysia-China Diplomatic Relations and the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar of Sarawak, Song Changhong, Acting Consul General of the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Huang Guohui, President Datuk of SCFA, had a cordial talk with Vice President Pan Jinquan. Sim Kui Hian highly praised JUST’s research achievements in the field of shipbuilding and marine studies, and expressed eager anticipation that our university could provide intellectual and technical support in the fields of shipbuilding and marine studies for the future development of Sarawak. Song Changhong affirmed the positive efforts made by our university in enrolling international students from Sarawak, strengthening educational cooperation and exchanges between two countries, making full use of the distinctive advantages of shipbuilding and marine studies, and promoting the China-Malaysia comprehensive friendship strategic cooperative partnership. Huang Guohui expressed that he would fully support the study plans of Sarawak students to enhance their shipbuilding and marine knowledge and skills at our university, looking forward to more in-depth cooperation between both sides in this field. The principal leader of the Indonesia Kalimantan-China Friendship Association also warmly invited the delegation to visit Jakarta and took a group photo for commemoration.
This is the first time that our university has organized a delegation to visit Southeast Asian countries, and it holds milestone significance. During the visit, the delegation not only signed school-level cooperation documents with relevant universities of Southeast Asia for the first time, but was also invited by the government of the visiting country to participate in state events for the first time, which played a positive role in enhancing our university’s influence on the international stage. It is worth mentioning that this visit broke through the enrollment gap of our university in Cambodia and Malaysia, laying a solid foundation for the enrollment of international students of our university. Additionally, mainstream Malaysia Chinese media such as Sin Chew Daily and International Times have given great attention and coverage to this visit, enhancing our university’s visibility in the Southeast Asian region.
